“Industry 4.0” refers to the development and diffusion of technologies that digitalise industry and agriculture. Despite the enormous promise of these technologies, industrial customers are very slow to embrace them. Can a leading consulting firm structure its offer in such a way that clients will embrace these possibilities?

A Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering is developing a research program in Integrated Computational Materials Engineering. He seeks help to understand the value that a successful project can deliver to companies. It is also necessary to identify specific companies that may participate and it is essential to identify these companies needs and requirements and what an ICME model will need to deliver to make it powerfully compelling to them.

A leading IT and Communications company with a strong R&D presence in Melbourne has the world’s best face recognition technology. How should it exploit that technology beyond border control and other high-value operations?
Project K4: Augmented Reality for Empowering Workforce
Augmented and Virtual Reality are emerging technologies with potential to introduce new experiences in perse industries such as training and education, health, media and entertainment, engineering and all those industries that you can think of.
A major telecommunications provider is assessing the use of augmented reality, for training and assisting its field force, operating in its data centres and exchanges. Using the smart glasses, the technicians operating in the field can get access to the relevant and contextual information – visually. This can be used for training and collaborating with a remotely located subject matter expert. This will drive work efficiency while building a safe working environment and bring down the travel cost in some cases.
Project K5: A platform for managing trade-offs in policy delivery
The Victorian government recently renewed its commitment to community consultation in policy formation. However, the operating agencies often find it very difficult to engage the community in a meaningful way. Using the problem of clearing hazardous roadside vegetation as a forum for inquiry, the team will help the Department of Environment, Water, Resources and Planning design its consultation platform.
Project M1: Innovative Technology for Hoddle Street
A leading consultant has been engaged by VicRoads to deliver the Detailed Design for the Streamlining Hoddle Street. The first stage has now been designed. Can it create a compelling case for a second stage, built around some dramatically new traffic management technologies?
Project M2: Innovative Solutions to Bushfire at the private land Interface. A Tool for Prevention.
Bushfires are a natural part of Victorian forests and occur frequently. A major determinant of fire severity is the amount of fuel available to burn. Fuel reduction practices that reduce risks to people and communities are more established on protected public land than elsewhere; and most communities at risk of damaging fire are near forests where no fuel reduction has occurred in the recent past. A government agency aims to visibly reduce bushfire risk by improving bushfire outcomes on properties adjoining land it manages. Tools that landowners and agencies can use are a critical part. Help Victorian communities by developing some of these tools.
Project M3: Creating Value from Engineering Project Data
The advent of digital design and modelling technologies, along with low-priced sensors means that it is possible to generate and capture huge amounts of data related to the design and construction of engineering projects. However, data by itself has no value. How can a leading engineering consultant create value from the data and capture some of that value for both itself and its clients?
Project M4: New Offers from a Car Manufacturer in a World of Connected Cars
Road transportation is about change dramatically. Vehicles will become driverless and will talk to each other. New companies will enter the market, with new business models. A major vehicle manufacturer would like to understand the distinctly Australian aspects of this transformation and how it can best position itself as a consequence. The project will focus on new opportunities created by the fact that cars will be connected to the internet.
Project M5: Water Sensors on Farms
Researchers at the University of Melbourne have developed a low-cost device for measuring the amount of moisture in soil. Soil moisture is a critical determinant of how quickly crops grow. This project will explore the ways in which an external organisation (e.g. manufacturer, bank, insurance company) might exploit the sensor to improve agricultural productivity.
Project O1: Enhancing the Market for Energy-Efficient Housing
Climate change can be mitigated by reshaping the way we build, enabling people to thrive both today and tomorrow. The technical solutions to designing buildings that are significantly more energy-efficient than the conventional are well established. However, though they have a lower lifecycle cost, these houses have a higher capital cost and pose a barrier to market. Is there a way to make these better-engineered houses attractive to consumers and developers to drive change in the building industry?
Project O2: Acquiring a Taste for Recycled Water and Recovered Resources
Urban regeneration in Melbourne requires new approaches to waste management and recycling. The developer is often required to provide these services. How could a leading technical consultancy help developers with technology to turn integrated resource recovery (water, and perhaps energy, nutrients and carbon) into a valued feature of a new community?
Project O3: Attributes and Barriers of Access of Wheeled Assistive Technology in Rough Terrain
Elderly people don't like using walking frames, especially outside in rough terrain. Is there a better design of mobility aid for them?
Project O4: Improved Claims Handling in Personal Insurance
An agency that regulates financial services has identified “significant shortcomings in a number of areas of life insurance claims handling, and there is a clear need for public reporting on life insurance outcomes….” It has also identified gaps in the communication to claimants during the claims process. The project team will help an entrepreneur turn these shortcomings into an opportunity.

Project P1: Create Liquidity in the Water Offer
A metropolitan water retailer would like to know how to best offer mains water, tank water, and recycled water to domestic customers so as to enhance the value they derive while maximizing its net profits.
Project P2 and P5: Risks in Recycling
Recycling, as an industry, is relatively young, and contains players spanning from very small to huge. The industry, however, has a very poor record for running safe workplaces. Accidents, especially fires, are much more common than in other comparable industries. Consequently, insurance premiums in the industry are rising rapidly. If trends continue, some recyclers will be unable to obtain insurance. Consequently, players in the industry will have greater difficulty accessing finance and reduced ability to secure existing and new contracts. This will make it harder for companies to grow and innovate, and throw the industry’s future sustainability into question.
A major insurance company would like to work with the industry to understand what can be done to ensure a sustainable future. It is looking for people who are interested in working with the company to help to create a sustainable recycling industry.
Project P3: Enhancing Waterway Health Through an ‘Outcomes-Based Approach’ Investment Style
A local water utility has identified an opportunity to create both significant environmental benefit and wider community benefit through the re-direction of infrastructure funds traditionally spent on sewer network upgrades towards more effective waterway health initiatives. The goal of this project to is to identify, research, prioritise and develop these alternate waterway health initiatives.
Project P4: Career Pathing/your Journey to Internships
Many employers require more than just technical skills from potential employees and these are not always easy to recognise in a student’s CV. Meanwhile, many students are not fully workplace-ready when they complete their technical training. The project team will identify the additional skills and competencies that employers are seeking, and propose ways to incorporate their acquisition into the Melbourne Engineering curriculum and continuing professional education. They will consider ways students can inform potential employers about the skills they have acquired and find ways to engage the engineering associations.

They need an analysis of the current market and the best way forward.
Project A2: Energy Storage Meets Big Data
Identification and development of service models based on battery monitoring of the UltraBattery electrochemistry in Energy Storage systems including survey of the opportunity; evaluation of the financial value of service models and potential paths for implementation.
Project A4: Behavioural CVs for Engineering Graduates
“Creating Innovative Engineering” will generate data that will allow students to construct a “behavioural CV”. How might students best gain value from this? How might MSE?
Project A5: Open Source Data & The Internet of Things (IoT) for a Smart City
Both user generated, open source data and the Internet of Things (IoT) have the potential to have significant positive impacts on local government, the private sector and not for profits to improve liveability, productivity and sustainability. There are already many important applications of both of these in play today, in traffic density tracking, collaborative consumption, healthcare, logistics management (and sustainability). However, there is vast potential to harness existing and new data sources to do even more in novel applications. This project seeks to capitalise on this potential.

A local galvanising facility is look to restructure their processes. Redesign the logistics system for a galvanising facility so they can lift production by 65%.
Project B4: How to Maximize Value with Premium Barramundi
A local fish grower produces premium Barramundi for the global market. Its current supply chain reduces product quality and its ability to communicate their value proposition to the market. Can it be improved?

Project C1: Help Teachers Teach Teachers how to Teach
The effectiveness of a school, as an educational institution, depends to an enormous extent on the ability of the school’s leadership to create a Professional Learning Community among the teaching faculty. The leaders of the sponsoring school would like to know if it is possible to facilitate the creation of such a community in schools through the use a software platform in combination with other interventions.

Entrepreneurial start-ups are more likely to thrive if they can get help from the right mentors. However, creating a good match is not straightforward. Design a system that allows effective matching of mentors to start-ups.

Project C5: Innovation in Education and Learning
Our school is a small education focused social business passionate about our mission of creating educational experiences for young people that inspire and support them to develop their unique passions, values, leadership, entrepreneurial capabilities and well-being. We currently develop and run tailored programs and camps for young people of school age, focused on their personal development, leadership, entrepreneurial capabilities and well-being. At present, our programs are largely delivered in-person, using our experiential and project-based learning models, using community and outdoor environments, run by highly skilled facilitators and educators.
